Choosing a phone gift

Phone accessories make easy gifts because people use them every day, but most of them depend on details about the recipient's phone that the giver may not know. A few checks before you buy help you avoid a case that doesn't fit or a charger the phone can't use at full speed. This Phone Balls guide covers those checks as of October 2026.

Find out the exact model

Cases, screen protectors, and some mounts fit one model and size only. An iPhone 17 case won't fit an iPhone 17e or an iPhone Air, and a Galaxy S26 case won't fit the S26+ or S26 Ultra. If you can't ask, look at the phone itself. On an iPhone the model name is in Settings under General and then About, and on Android phones it's under About phone in Settings.

Gifts that don't depend on the model

Some gifts work across phones. A USB-C charger with USB Power Delivery and a certified cable suit any current iPhone, Galaxy, or Pixel, and the fast charger guide lists the wattage that covers each one. A power bank works with any phone that charges over USB-C, and the power bank guide covers sizes that are easy to fly with. Car mounts with adjustable grips fit most phones, as the car mount guide explains.

Magnetic gifts need magnets

MagSafe wallets, stands, chargers, and grips need a phone with built-in magnets or a magnetic case. iPhones from the iPhone 12 onward have MagSafe magnets, with two exceptions, the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 16e. Google's Pixel 11 phones have magnets built in, while Samsung's Galaxy S26 series doesn't, so pair a magnetic accessory for a Galaxy owner with a magnetic case. MagSafe and Qi2 explained has the details for each phone.

Cases as gifts

A case is the most personal accessory and the easiest to get wrong. Check the model first and the material second, and the case materials guide explains how TPU, silicone, and leather wear. If the recipient charges wirelessly, choose a case with a magnet ring. Design-led and novelty cases have their own article, the novelty case gift guide, with a checklist for buying one for someone else.

Small gifts and add-ons

A spare certified cable, a short cable for a power bank, a screen protector in the right size, or a grip makes a good small gift or an add-on to a larger one. iPhones before the iPhone 15 use Lightning, so check the port before you buy a cable. The accessories under $30 article covers these categories at that price, with what to look for in each.

Before you buy a phone gift, check

  • The exact model and size
  • Whether the phone has MagSafe or Qi2 magnets built in
  • USB-C or Lightning, for older iPhones
  • The store's return policy, in case the fit is wrong
